K2 Base Camp Packing List: What to Bring for the Baltoro

For the K2 Base Camp trek, pack for hot lower valleys and nights around −10 °C at Concordia: broken-in waterproof boots with ankle support, a down jacket, a waterproof shell, merino layers, category 4 glacier sunglasses, a 30–35 litre daypack and trekking poles. Keep checked luggage to about 20 kg for the Skardu flight. Porters carry your main bag; you carry 5–8 kg of water, layers and snacks. Crampons, a harness and a helmet are only needed for the Gondogoro La.

What you're packing for

The lower valleys are hot and dusty; on the glacier, days at Concordia are usually 5–15 °C and nights drop to about −10 °C. Most of the walking is on rock-covered ice, and there's no phone signal after Askole, so you live from your bags for about two weeks. Your main bag travels with the porters and waits at camp; everything you need during the day goes in your daypack.

Footwear

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support, leather or synthetic, well broken in before you come
  • Light camp shoes or sandals for the evenings
  • Gaiters, to keep grit and water out of your boots on the glacier
  • Microspikes for icy early mornings (no crampons needed on the standard route)
  • 5–6 pairs of merino trekking socks, plus 2 pairs of liner socks

Clothing

  • 2 merino base-layer tops and 1 base-layer bottom
  • 2–3 long-sleeved trekking shirts, for sun protection
  • 2 pairs of trekking trousers

Daypack and trail

  • Two 1-litre water bottles (drinking tubes can freeze up high)
  • Adjustable trekking poles
  • Dry bags to keep clothes dry in your main bag
  • Favourite snacks and electrolyte tablets from home
  • Water purification tablets, as a backup

Sun, health and wash kit

  • Glacier sunglasses (category 4), and a spare pair

FAQ

Questions, answered

What boots do I need for K2 Base Camp?

Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and a stiff, grippy sole, well broken in before the trip. Leather or synthetic both work. Add gaiters for the glacier and light camp shoes for the evenings.

Do I need crampons for K2 Base Camp?

Not on the standard route: the Baltoro is covered in rock, and microspikes handle icy early mornings. Crampons, a harness and a helmet are only needed if you add the Gondogoro La, where fixed ropes are used in July and August.

How much luggage can I bring?

Keep your checked luggage to about 20 kg for the Islamabad–Skardu flight. Porters carry your main bag on the trek; you carry a daypack of about 5–8 kg.
