Best Time to Visit Skardu: A Month-by-Month Verdict
The best time to visit Skardu is April–October for the full circuit — June to August for Deosai and trekking, April for blossom, October for autumn gold — while December–February offers snow-dusted deserts, frozen lakes and empty forts for travellers who prefer solitude to convenience. Flights operate all year; Babusar road access runs roughly mid-May to late October.
Spring (late March – May): blossom and thaw
Blossom sweeps the Skardu amphitheatres in early-to-mid April — Chunda's terraces are the connoisseur's stage — while the high plateau stays shut. Days run 12–20 °C, nights still bite, and hotels are gloriously unbooked. Babusar usually opens mid-May, switching the road math in your favour.
Summer (June – August): everything open, everyone here
Deosai's flowers, Basho's meadows, all treks, all roads: peak Skardu. It's also peak demand — flights and fort rooms sell out weeks ahead and the desert holds day-trip crowds until sunset. Book 60 days out, or travel with an operator whose allocations pre-date your decision.
Autumn (September – October): the photographer's secret
Poplars turn amber, air clears to telescope grade, crowds evaporate after Eid traffic ends. Deosai stays crossable to mid-October most years. If you can only ever come once and don't need the plateau in flower, come the first week of October.
Winter (December – February): the white valley
Skardu keeps flying when the roads close over Babusar, and the reward for cold hands is the region's most exclusive scenery: snow on Katpana's dunes, half-frozen Kachura, fort corridors to yourself. Our Winter Retreat exists because this season converts everyone who tries it.
Questions, answered
What is the best month to visit Skardu?
For most travellers: June for full access with maximum green, or the first week of October for autumn colour with thin crowds. April is the blossom answer; January the solitude one.
Is Skardu worth visiting in December?
Yes, deliberately: flights run all winter, days are sunny at −2 to +8 °C, and the snow-on-sand desert photographs exist in no other month. Pack for −15 °C nights or take our kit-included Winter Retreat.
When is Deosai open?
The plateau road generally opens mid-June and closes mid-October with the first lasting snow — inside those dates, July–August gives wildflowers and bear activity.
