Photography credits

We believe the mountains should be shown as they actually are. Every landscape and heritage photograph on this site is a real photograph of the place it accompanies, credited below to its author and licence. Where a specific building or viewpoint has no freely-licensed photograph, we show the surrounding valley instead and say so — we would rather show you an honest neighbouring view than a picture of somewhere else.

Photographs marked approximate show the surrounding area rather than the exact spot named. As our own photographers work through Gilgit-Baltistan, these are being replaced with SafarGB originals.

Map data

The contour map on our homepage is drawn from the Terrain Tiles open dataset (built by Mapzen, hosted by AWS). For the Karakoram it uses SRTM and GMTED2010 elevation data, courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey. Summit heights are the published elevations, and the orange line is an approximate drawing of the usual trek route from Askole to K2 Base Camp.

If you are the author of a photograph here and would like the credit corrected or the image removed, please write to [email protected] and we will act the same day.
