How Much Does It Cost to Climb K2? 2027 Prices, Fees and Days

Climbing K2 in 2027 costs about $40,000–75,500 with a full-service commercial expedition, which usually includes the permit, oxygen and a personal climbing Sherpa. Climbers with their own team pay about $5,500–9,000 for base camp services from a Pakistani operator, then add high-altitude support and oxygen. The government royalty is $3,500 per climber in summer, plus a park fee of about $290, a liaison officer for each team and a refundable helicopter-rescue deposit. Expeditions take 42–60 days from Islamabad.

2027 prices, as the operators publish them

These are the prices on each operator's own website on 18 October 2026, for the 2027 summer season. All include the climbing permit and Islamabad–Skardu flights, and most include a personal climbing Sherpa and oxygen, typically five bottles.

  • SummitClimb (US): $40,450, full service. 21 June – 4 August 2027, 45–52 days in Pakistan.
  • Ascent Himalayas (Nepal): $44,000. 20 June – 8 August 2027.
  • Imagine Nepal: $45,900. 20 June – 8 August 2027, 50 days.
  • Mountain Professionals (US): $55,000. 21 June – 4 August 2027, 45 days.
  • Furtenbach Adventures (Austria): €55,000. 19 June – 8 August 2027, 51 days.
  • Madison Mountaineering (US): $75,500. 24 June – 4 August 2027, 42 days.
  • Elite Exped, Seven Summit Treks and 8K Expeditions publish dates but quote prices on request.

What's left out of the price

None of these prices includes international flights or insurance, and you bring your own personal gear. Insurance is mandatory: one operator asks for at least $150,000 of medical and rescue cover, and another recommends at least $50,000 of helicopter-rescue cover. Expect to tip your climbing Sherpa a summit bonus of $1,000–2,000 or more, plus about $350–500 for the kitchen and camp staff. Oxygen beyond the standard allowance is usually charged separately.

The government fees

Gilgit-Baltistan's royalty for K2 is $3,500 per climber in summer (April to September), $2,000 in autumn and $1,000 in winter, on the official fee sheet published through Pakistan's online visa system. It used to be a flat $12,000 for a team of up to seven. A 2024 rise to $5,000 per climber was suspended by the Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Court in March 2025, and in May 2025 the provincial cabinet set the current rate. ExplorersWeb reported no change for 2026, and we have seen no announcement for 2027.

On top come a Central Karakoram National Park waste-management fee of about $290 per person, a government liaison officer who accompanies every team in the restricted zone (one Pakistani operator puts the cost at about $4,000 per team), and a refundable deposit with Askari Aviation, which flies mountain rescues in Gilgit-Baltistan, lodged before you climb. Askari's own briefing gives $12,000, returned less a $300 charge if unused; operators quote $10,000–12,000. The deposit isn't the bill: a rescue is charged by the flying hour, and single-engine helicopters fly in pairs.

For comparison, Nepal's Everest permit costs $15,000 per climber in 2026, more than four times K2's.

Climbing on local base camp services

Experienced climbers with their own team can buy base camp services from a Pakistani operator instead of a full package: about $5,500–9,000 per climber, the higher prices including the royalty and park fee. That typically covers domestic flights, hotels, porters and a base camp kitchen, and stops at base camp; check whether the liaison officer is included. Above it you add your own high-altitude porter (one operator estimates about $5,000 for an experienced one), oxygen and fixed-rope arrangements.

This route saves money only if you already have 8,000-metre experience, a partner and your own judgement about weather and avalanche risk. Expect any operator to ask for previous 8,000-metre experience before taking you on K2.

How long it takes to climb K2

Allow 42–60 days from Islamabad: most Sherpa-supported expeditions run 45–52 days, and Pakistani base camp services 55–60. The first week covers briefings in Islamabad, the flight to Skardu and a six-to-seven-hour jeep ride to Askole. The walk up the Baltoro to base camp (about 5,050–5,150 m) takes 7–9 days with rest days. Then come four to five weeks on the mountain, with acclimatisation rotations up the Abruzzi Spur, from Camp 1 at about 6,000 m to Camp 4 at 7,600–7,900 m.

Summit pushes usually come between about 20 July and mid-August: 28–29 July in 2024 and 11 August in 2025. In 2026 nobody summited at all, after high wind, heavy July snow, rockfall and the search following the avalanche on neighbouring Broad Peak. The walk out takes 3–5 days. Fast-track trips of 28–29 days exist for climbers who pre-acclimatise for six to eight weeks in a hypoxic tent at home; Furtenbach's costs €59,000.

Why K2 costs less than Everest but asks more

K2's permit is cheaper and its expeditions are smaller, but the mountain is steeper and further north, with worse weather and longer stretches of exposed climbing such as the Bottleneck beneath the summit seracs. One compilation counts 964 summits and 92 deaths to the end of 2025, about one death for every ten summits; on Everest it is about one in forty. Counting rules differ, so treat both as rough.

That is why the price lines that matter most aren't the royalty but the oxygen allowance, the Sherpa ratio, the weather forecasting and the experience of the team fixing the ropes. Compare those before you compare totals.

What SafarGB does on K2

We run the Pakistani side of K2 expeditions from Skardu: the royalty and permit paperwork, the liaison officer, porter crews from Hushe and Askole for the approach, the base camp kitchen and supply runs, and hotels and transport at both ends. Guiding, high-altitude porters and oxygen are agreed in writing for each expedition, with your own guiding team or one we introduce, so you know exactly what is and isn't included before paying anything.
