Rakaposhi Base Camp (Tagafari)

Three easy days to the foot of a 7,788-metre wall.

The Rakaposhi Base Camp trek is the easiest walk to the foot of a 7,000-metre peak in the Karakoram: three days there and back from Minapin in Nagar (about 2,000 m), up beside the Minapin Glacier to the meadow of Tagafari at about 3,260–3,300 m, roughly 18 km in all. From the ridge above Hapakun, Rakaposhi, Diran and the ice wall between them come into full view. It's an open-zone trek with no permit, best from June to September.

Rakaposhi (7,788 m) rises about 5,900 m above the Hunza River within 11 km, one of the greatest vertical rises on earth. The trek starts in Minapin, a few kilometres off the Karakoram Highway: three to four hours up to the meadow at Hapakun (about 2,800 m), then two to three hours on to Tagafari. At the camp itself Rakaposhi's summit hides behind its east peak, and Diran fills the sky, shedding avalanches off the ridge at sunset.

Strong walkers can add a day to Diran Base Camp (about 3,650–3,700 m) or Kacheli Lake (about 4,000 m), across the Minapin Glacier. That crossing is unmarked, changes every year and has crevasses, so it needs a local guide and a rope.

Minapin is a conservative village, so dress modestly; donkeys carry the loads. It makes a gentle first trek, a good acclimatisation walk before the bigger routes, and an easy addition to a Hunza journey.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How hard is the Rakaposhi Base Camp trek?

Easy for anyone with day-hiking fitness: about 1,250 m of ascent over two days on a good trail, with no glacier travel unless you go on to Diran Base Camp.

Can you see Rakaposhi from base camp?

Best from the ridge above Hapakun, on the way up, where Rakaposhi, Diran and the ice wall between them are all in view. At Tagafari itself Rakaposhi's summit is partly hidden behind its east peak, and Diran dominates.

Do I need a permit for Rakaposhi Base Camp?

No. It's an open-zone trek, so no trekking permit is required.
