Khaplu Palace (1840) is the finest surviving royal residence in Baltistan — a four-storey timber-and-stone yabgo seat restored into a Serena heritage hotel, 103 km east of Skardu. Its balcony frames the Shyok valley with Masherbrum's white pyramid beyond; UNESCO honoured the restoration.
Where Shigar is intimate, Khaplu is stately: a full royal court's architecture with carved balconies stacked like theatre boxes over the orchard. Fifteen minutes away stands the 700-year-old Chaqchan mosque, its timber geometry from the same civilisation that raised Kashmir's shrines.
103 km / ~2 h from Skardu along the Shyok. The natural final night of a Baltistan circuit, with Hushe valley's peaks a morning's drive further.
Questions, answered
Khaplu Palace vs Shigar Fort?
Khaplu for grandeur, mountain frames and quiet; Shigar for intimacy and proximity to Skardu's sights. Circuits that include both never regret it.
